Between April 16th and April 21st 2009, the Embassy of the State of Israel launched a humanitarian project evolving children’s cardiac diseases.
The project had three different parts:

1. An international photo exhibition.
The photographs in the exhibition are mostly of children whose lives have been saved by “Save a Child’s Heart”(SACH), an Israeli-based foundation that has been saving children’s lives by working to improve the quality of cardiac care for children anywhere in the world.
The photographs of this exhibition tell the amazing story of the foundation, its doctors and patients.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition in Nigeria, took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel. Invitees from the Ministry of Health, the FCT, business sector and doctors from all around Nigeria attended.

2. Israeli doctors arrived in Nigeria.
Two Israeli medical experts arrived in Nigeria to take part in this important project.
Dr. Eliahu Wielunsky, Deputy Director of Schneider Children’s Medical Center and  Dr. Alex Levi, Head of Pediatric Cardiology Unit and Fetal Echocardiography Laboratory at Meir Hospital.
The two doctors were our special guests at the opening ceremony of the photographs exhibition. During that same week the doctors visited an orphanage near Abuja and preformed medical tests for the orphans free of charge. On the same day, staff of the Embassy of Israel arrived at the orphanage and handed out presents and candies on behalf of the Ambassador and the State of Israel.
Later that week, the doctors delivered professional lectures at the National Hospital for general doctors, pediatricians and cardiologists.

3. A boy was sent to Israel for an heart surgery
A three year old boy with a hole in his heart was located by the Embassy of Israel, and in collaboration between the Embassy and SACH foundation was sent to Israel in order to be operated.
The child and mother were flown to Israel courtesy of Lufthansa German Airlines.
We are now waiting for the child and mother safe return home.

Elections in Israel - February 2009

On October 26, newly elected Kadima Chair Tzipi Livni informed President Shimon Peres that she did not succeed in forming a coalition government. Peres decided to call for general elections to the Knesset, which have been set for February 10, 2009.

When a new government is to be constituted, the President of the State, after consulting with representatives of the parties elected to the Knesset, assigns the task of forming the government to a Knesset member. This Knesset member is usually the leader of the party with the largest Knesset representation or the head of the party that leads a coalition with more than 60 members.

At the conclusion of the consultations, delegates representing 65 incoming Knesset members recommended that the president will task MK Binyamin Netanyahu with forming the next government.
On February 20, President Shimon Peres invited Binyamin Netanyahu to his official Residence in Jerusalem in order to task him with forming the next government of the State of Israel.
On March 20 President Shimon Peres granted Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu  a 14-day extension in order to form his government.

Pope Accepts Invitation to Visit Holy Land

President Shimon Peres reacted to Pope Benedict XVI's announcement that he has accepted President Peres's invitation to come visit the Holy Land:

"I am delighted that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has responded positively and accepted my invitation to visit the Holy Land. The Pope will be a most honored guest, welcomed and respected by people from all walks of life. His visit will be a moving and important event bringing the spirit of peace and hope. Welcome to Israel."

In his Sunday Mass Pope Benedict said, "From May 8th-15th, I will make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to ask the Lord, visiting the places sanctified by his passage on the earth, for his precious blessing of unity and peace for the Middle East and for all of mankind. I am counting on the spiritual support of all of you, and may God accompany me, support me, and bless with his Grace all those who I meet on my way."

Three million tourists visited Israel in 2008, of whom one million were pilgrims (two million Christians in total). Most pilgrims visit the holy Christian and Jewish sites in Jerusalem, the Galilee and Bethlehem.

The Government of Israel has inaugurated a special website dedicated to the upcoming pilgimage of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Israel.
The website, presented in eight languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Italian, German and Hebrew), contains textual and audio-visual information on the Papal pilgrimage, Israel-Vatican relations, Christian communities in Israel and Christian holy sites throughout the country.
The website will provide regular updates throughout the course of the visit.
The website will also provide live broadcasts of events during the Pope's pilgrimage, including a visit to Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Memorial (11 May), masses at the Garden of Gethsemane (Jerusalem, 12 May) and at the Mount of the Precipice (Nazereth, 14 May), as well as visits to the site of the Last Supper (12 May), and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (15 May).

In Terrorist Captivity Since 25 June 2006

Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was captured in a cross border raid on the crossing Kerem Shalom from the Gaza Strip by Palestinian Hamas terrorists on 25 June 2006 and has been held hostage by them since.

Especially grave is the fact that this unprovoked abduction was carried out on sovereign Israeli territory.

Neither Israel nor any other civilized, law abiding country can accept this situation.

We urge you to support us in our endeavor - to bring our soldier home!
